Experts Appalled at Manslaughter Verdict

Family Violence experts have reacted angrily to a manslaughter verdict for a man who bludgeoned his wife to death with a cricket bat.

“This verdict continues to send a message that if people are upset enough then violence is acceptable,” Brian Gardner, national manager of the National Network of Stopping Violence Services said.

“It’s about time domestic violence murders were treated the same way as any other murder.”

Mr Gardner called on lawyers to get real about domestic violence in New Zealand and refuse to use a defence such as provocation.

“Violence is never justified.  Men who use domestic violence commonly justify their behaviour by saying ‘she asked for it’, this verdict does the same – blames the victim.

“It is not this woman’s fault that she is dead, it’s his.  People experience provocation every day of their lives and do not assault and murder,” he said.

Half New Zealand’s murders each year are a result of domestic violence, this won’t change while the courts send a message that it’s ok to bash your wife to death if you suspect she’s seeing someone else, he said.
